Whether you’ve had a soldering class, attempted to learn from a book, or never even tried, if you are looking to learn how to silver-solder or just get better at it, this class is for you. Learn the fundamentals of casting by exploring the ancient technique of pouring molten metal directly into molds carved or formed from sand, soft stone, and other surprising materials. This process does not require any major equipment so it is easily reproduced in a home studio or in your back yard! No experience necessary.

Fold forming is an exciting technique wherein sheet metal is manipulated and hammered to create fabulously textured, 3-dimensional, organic forms. This is a quick porcess, so students will have the opportunity to create a variety of basic forms in this quick workshop. All levels.

Bronze Precious Metal Clay Basics

Striking jewelry can be made easily and inexpensively with Bronze Precious Metal Clay, bronze clay that when fired in a kiln results in pure metal! This workshop will focus on the basics of working with PMC Bronze however students might also explore components for earring and pendants. No experience necessary however intermediate level students encouraged.

We had so much fun when Victoria came to teach with us two years ago we just had to have her back. This time she’ll be teaching Russian Filigree. This style of filigree is tension fit and then soldered together. In this three day hands on class you will learn to make scalloped wire, a pendant, a ring, and begin a bead. This is a class you don’t want to miss!

Have you already taken our Beginner Series and are looking for a new challenge? Come spend a week in our Total Immersion: Intermediate Jewelry Making workshop. In this five day workshop you will expand upon what you already know and focus on construction and soldering tricks as well as finishing techniques. You will also have the option to learn new stone settings including tube setting and prong setting. Learn about basic hydronic press forming, simple hinges, and creating your own clasp. This class will let you take your jewelry to the next level.

Faceted Stone Setting Theory and Application: Fancy Stones

If you have taken our other Faceted Stone Setting workshop on setting round faceted stones (or have equivilent experience) then this is the next course. Kirk Lang will show you how to set a pear shaped, triangle, and princess cut stone. Prong, flush set, and thick bezel setting will all be covered. Finally learn how to set all those fancy stones you’ve been collecting but aren’t sure how to set.

As the new year unfolds we start looking ahead to see what we want to accomplish and what the year has to offer. This weekend Keith Lewis is back at Danaca Design to teach us all about creating mixed metal patterns and compositions. You know all those scraps of different metals you have laying around? Or would you like to start adding some gold to your work but you can only afford a tiny, tiny bit? This class is about how to use those small bits of metals to create new “yardage” of mixed metals that you can use in your jewelry work.

Want to know more? Well we asked Keith Lewis himself to tell us a bit more about what to expect this weekend and here is what he has to say:

How do you use mixed metal surfaces in your work or how might I?

In the past I have used these techniques to make more production-oriented work, as they generate lively, visually arresting patterns at relatively low expense. For instance, with these techniques you can get a lot of bang from a very small amount of gold.

That said, the resultant patterned sheet is often a bit difficult to solder, so one of the exciting challenges is to devise ways to incorporate it into work using cold connections. I’m hoping on Sunday, after folks have generated some “yardage” we will be able to brainstorm about some ways to do so, particularly in the form of simple, elegant pendants and earrings

What is most exciting about the process you will teach this coming weekend?

For me there are two things. First; these are techniques that grow from and help elucidate some of the intrinsic qualities of metal- particularly different melting characteristics and malleabilities. I find that I understand metal better from having experimented with these techniques.

Secondly, these techniques permit the kind of playfulness and spontaneity that is hard to come by in metalsmithing. There are a lot of pleasant surprises and intriguing puzzles that arise from this approach.

Is there a history of mixed metal surfaces in metalworking? Can you tell me a little about it?

Yes, there certainly is. The mot obvious reference point is Japanese mokume-gane and some of what I’m covering might be called “faux-mokume”. There is also the long history of marriage-of-metal within Western and Asian metals traditions and periodic uses of cold-inlay techniques in everything from Japanese metalwork to Indian Mughal work (as well as Western armor-work.) Another reference- of course- is the diffusion bonding of materials in damascening, Sheffield plate, “gold-filled” jewelry and bimetal such as those made by Phil Baldwin.

Total Immersion: Beginning Jewelry Making (July 11-15, 10:30-5)

The Total Immersion: Beginning Jewelry Making is the equivalent to taking all three of our Beginning Jewelry Making series workshops. Learn the fundamentals of working with precious metal: sawing, disc cutting and dapping, hammer texturing, roll printing, basic forming and finishing, as well as bezel setting stones. In this beginning silversmithing class students will make individualized jewelry pieces including a pin, pendent, ring and a simple linked project. Each night you’ll go home dreaming of what to create the next day, designing in your sleep. This class is an ideal opportunity to explore a range of techniques, in a condensed time, while creating several projects.

 

Beginning and Intermediate Classes

Cynthia Toops’ Seven Bead Bracelet (September 24-25, 10:00-5)

Explore the wide variety of possibilities in polymer clay for jewelry while focusing on seven unusual beads for a comprehensive sampler bracelet. In this intensive weekend workshop students will investigate various bead shapes, explore hollow and foil cores, surface decoration with simple and complex canes, as well as carving, drawing, onlay, mokumegane and mosaic work. Cynthia is masterful with polymer clay, bringing a creative edge to everything she does. 

Charles Lewton Brain’s Patination of Metals workshop (Aug 26, 9-5)

Patina is the final touch, the icing on the cake, the surface that sets one apart from the crowd; it can add both depth and texture transforming our metal, often unpredictably, into an unimaginably beautiful thing. On metal, patina refers to a thin coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides or sulfates formed on the surface during exposure to atmospheric elements, a common example is rust or the warm brown color of the penny in your pocket. Charles will present safe, easy patination methods for metals that involve easily obtainable (think kitchen chemicals) to produce a wide range of blues, greens, browns, blacks, greys and reddish tones on most metals including precious. Application methods and control of pattern and surface will be described and addressed as a compositional system.

June 17 – 19, Friday – Sunday Bill Dawson will be teaching Introduction to Metal Inlay at Danaca Design. But what is metal inlay? I asked Bill to give us a brief history of the technique and he was very generous with his information. Here is what Bill had to say:

“Precious metal inlay techniques are quite ancient, with early examples dating from the Bronze Age, and becoming rather popular with the introduction of iron working and gold refining around 2600-2500 ybp.  A beautiful early example is the 3600 year old bronze disc shown here.  The sun, moon, important stars, and the sunrise and set horizons are all marked in gold inlay.  Many experts believe it to have been an instrument for making corrections to the calendar from astronomical observations, but others think it may have been used for far more complex calculations.

Basically, inlay work involves mechanically attaching a soft metal like gold or silver to a harder and contrasting metal like bronze or iron.  Typically this is done in one of two basic ways:  For field or line inlay, some of the base metal is cut away to make room for the inlay, and the edges of the hollow or channel is undercut so that when the inlay is driven in it forms a dovetail.  That is the channel is wider at the bottom, and the soft metal fills the space and can’t come out.  Alternately a file tooth pattern can be cut on the base metal, and when the softer inlay metal is driven down the teeth grip like Velcro  This has the advantage of allowing for the inlay of very thin foil.  Base metals are usually chosen to either contrast with the color of the inlay,or to take a differential patina.  Artists in Japan use this to great effect, as with the vase pictured here by Kazuo Kashima.

In the workshop at Danaca we will consider and compare Eastern and Western approaches to these techniques, and make many practice samples.  These will include dot inlay, line inlay, and inlayed foils.  One of the great advantages to foil inlay, called “Damisquino de Oro” in Spain, and “Nunome Zogan”,in Japan, is that you can cut the tooth in patterns that show through the foil, and add to the design.  In fact Nunome Zogan means cloth textured inlay.  I have used this visible texture in the leaves in the disc brooch here.”

WORKSHOP:Toaster Powder Coating with Rachel Shimpock

You may have heard the term “powder coating” metal but do you know what it is? Powder coating is a dry powder that is heated at a low temperature to adhere and form a skin. Usually the powder is a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer that is applied electrostatically.

Many household items are powder coated: appliances, light fixtures, car parts. It is commonly used in industry for its uniform appearance and durability. Though it is also a great way for jewelers to add color and even texture to their work. For production jewelry it is ideal because several pieces can be cured at one time. 

Large items like that are powder coated using a spray booth and static charge to get the powder to “stick” to the surface. Though you can also sift the dry powder onto a surface similar to applying enamels.

Once the powder has been applied it can be heated in a toaster oven to cure and flow. Do not use a toaster oven that you also use for food. 

Some benefits to powder coated surfaces are:

  • uniform and durable finish
  • many colors and finishes to choose from
  • quick application and cure time
  • low curing temperatures
  • does not need any solvents or chemicals

Powder Coat 8

Once heated and cooled the powder turns into a smooth “skin” like coating that is permanently attached to the surface. Unlike enamel the curing temperatures are low enough that powder coating can be applied to more than just metal. Wood and some organic items can also be powder coated. Anything that can withstand a temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit can be powder coated.

Lost wax casting is widely used today for mass producing jewelry and jewelry components but is also used to create unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces as well. Wednesday nights, Oct 14 – Nov 18, 6:30pm-9:30pm our Wax Working for Jewelers will get you started creating your own waxes in no time.Whether you are a new or returning student you will learn the fundamentals and some good tricks for designing and creating wax models for casting in this six week workshop. This is a reoccurring class so if you missed it this time check back for future classes!

One of the most important parts of casting is starting will a well designed and carved wax model. Without proper planning the metal may not be able to flow correctly during the casting process resulting in a partial casting. And knowing how to design a wax with an eye toward the finished design not only helps with the look of the piece but can save you a lot of time in clean up after the casting is done!

The final waxes will be sent out to a professional casting house and returned the final week for finishing. This is a multiple week class and so students are able and encouraged to come into the studio during Practice Hours to work on class projects.

What do you think of when you hear polymer clay? Well if you are Cynthia Toops you think it is a wonderful material with unlimited potential in jewelry making. September 26 & 27 Cynthia will be teaching Extraordinary Effects with Polymer Striped Canes at Danaca Design. Cynthia’s own work takes polymer clay to the next level making the mundane magical.

But what are polymer striped canes?

Polymer canes are when long strips of polymer clay are layered, usually to create a design, and then cut apart. They are based off of the millefiori glasswork technique that is used to apply decoration to glass objects. Canes patterns can very simple to very complex and how the canes are laid out together adds to the beauty and complexity.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These canes can then be used to cover beads and cabochons to create unique decorative elements for your jewelry. Techniques like combing, carving and mokume gane will be covered expanding and enlivening your repertoire.

Finally students will explore “thin sheet work” to make simple pins, bracelets and other alternative polymer clay forms.

This class is open to all levels, from the beginner curious about the many possibilities of polymer clay to the advanced student interested in focusing on a particular aspect of the medium.

Pointed Stone Setting: Theory and Applications Part II

November 7 and 8, Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 – 5:00

Shed your apprehension and learn to set challenging shaped stones in this comprehensive, hands-on weekend with master stone-setter Kirk Lang. Building off, Faceted Stone Setting Theory and Applications: Part I, this more advanced level workshop will instruct students in how to confidently set faceted stones with pointed corners. Prerequisites: Basic jewelry fabrication skills and Theory and Application Part I or equivalent.

Chasing and Repousse: A Modern Approach with a Traditional Base

This is a process oriented beginning class in which students will not only learn to use the tools for chasing and repoussé but will experiment with the extraordinary effects of these tools on sheet copper. Traditional lining and punching will be covered as well as refining techniques and everyone will have the opportunity to make one chasing tool. No experience necessary however returning students welcome.

While there are several torch options, one of the most popular among bench jewelers is a mixed fuel, oxy-propane, and one of the best is the Smith “little-torch”. Micki Lippe, a seasoned professional, will show you why as she demonstrates the versatility and precision of this well-loved tool. Basic soldering experience required.

So, you’re a jeweler or metalsmith about to be stranded on a desert island. You can bring only one tool. (Oh yeah, the island has electricity). What tool do you bring?
If you were Andy Cooperman you’d most likely bring your Flexible Shaft machine. It may be the most versatile tool at the bench. And yet for many makers it is the most underutilized and least understood. All levels.
